Interview series with Poet Sascha Engel

According to my passport, I am Sascha Engel: but with more beard than wisdom, and a penchant for cut-ups, I weasel out of texts, including – possibly, barely – that one.

When/why did you start writing poetry? – answers in adjectivesrecent, fumbled, distant

How do you write a poem? – answer in five verbswrite, print, scribble, print, cut up

What is your definition of what experimental poetry is?Anything that dissolves the coherence of a text. Which is to say that ‘poetry’ is either an umbrella term, or an ill-defined genre, or nothing at all.

Have you done many interviews before? Do you find them repetitive? Repetitive? Repetitive?Interviews are to repetition as interviewn are to repetitios as intervieon are to repetitiwn as interviion are to repetitewn as intervtion are to repetiiews as interition is to repetviews as intetition is to reperviews as intetition is to reperviews as inpetition is to reterviews as iepetition is to rnterviews as repetition is to interviews.

What’s a favorite snack you like when poet-ing?Anything notwithstanding the five second rule, except when it’s delicious.

What are you kinda obsessed by?Star Wars. And not ‘kinda’. Just obsessed.
Do you tell your social circle about your poet-ing?Ah yes, friends. I remember those, it was a sunny day in 1994…

How do you rebel?Every act of rebellion is already incorporated into the edifice, and that doesn’t mean that not rebelling somehow becomes rebelling. So I don’t think I do.

Tell me a literary/science fact or joke, please? ‘Science’ is not literature.

What’s your fav colour, poet, snack. (this is your pen name!)Black Jeffers Pringles (and there’s a cat name, too)

After teaching in U.S. higher education for a few years, Sascha Engel now lives in Cork, Ireland. He is the founder of Strukturriss, a journal focusing on anarchic dissolutions of text, and publishes occasional pieces of his own, most recently in Beir Bua, Neuro Logical, Streetcake, and Tattie Zine.
