A Mhuire Mhathair

Ever since I saw Tommy Tiernan perform in Dublin, I have had this song in my head. You see, Tommy sang a communion song, as Gaeilge and we all sang along.

Hymn to Our Lady
A Mhuire Mháthair                                                  Mary, Mother

A Mhuire Mháthair ‘sé seo mo ghuí,                       Mary Mother, this is my prayer
go maire Íosa, go deo im’ chroi.                             May Jesus live eternally in my heart

Ave Maria, mo ghrá Ave,                                       Hail Mary, hail dearest one
is tusa mo mháthair, is máthair Dé.                       You’re my mother and God’s mother
Ave Maria, mo ghrá Ave,                                       Hail Mary, hail dearest one
is tusa mo mháthair, is máthair Dé.                       You’re my mother and God’s mother

A Mhuire Mháthair, tá lán de ghrás,                       Mary Mother, full of grace
go mbeidh tú taobh liom, ar uair mo bháis.             Be at my side at death’s hour

Ave Maria, mo ghrá Ave,                                      Hail Mary, hail dearest one
is tusa mo mháthair, is máthair Dé.                      You’re my mother and God’s mother
Ave Maria, mo ghrá Ave,                                      Hail Mary, hail dearest one
is tusa mo mháthair, is máthair Dé.                      You’re my mother and God’s mother
